Some so-called experts would like you to believe that to requires you to have the brain of a rocket scientist, but honestly it isn’t that hard. Here’s 5 quick and easy steps to get yourself a customized website.

The key here is to ensure that you do the ground work first.  In a nutshell, is your website for business or pleasure?  If it is for business you will need a straightforward ecommerce website.

If it is the latter, you need to think carefully.  In order for you to produce good content, it will work better if it’s something that is close to you and something that you enjoy talking about.  If you’re an adrenaline junkie, it would be a good idea to open a website that introduces like minded people to the latest extreme sport or talks about exiting globe-trekking adventures!

If you’re going along that path, you will need to make sure that the look and feel of your website is appropriate by using a relevant template for your website. You wouldn’t want to put off your visitors by applying a knitting theme to your website if it’s all about skydiving?

A domain name is the most important part of a website. Without it, your website basically doesn’t exist—there is no pathway which search engines can follow to reach your website. It is effectively the identity and the address of your website. An example would be www.mywebsite.com. Create something that is unique and relevant. Going back to the adrenaline junkie website, choose something apt, along the lines of adrenalinejunkie.com. But remember to keep it minimal. Do not confuse your visitors by adding too many characters to your URL like numbers and hyphens.

In order for your website to be online you must register with a web hosting company.  A web host constitutes the vital link between your computer and the internet and will enable your website to be online.

When choosing a hosting company make sure that you go for a large reputable firm which offers 24hours technical support.  Don’t select an obscure company just because their rates are cheaper as this could turn out to be a false economy.  When you encounter a problem with your website you will want an immediate response and not merely be re-directed to an answering machine.  In a nutshell always look for an excellent web host with good reputation!

Visitors won’t keep coming back to your website because of its layout and shiny buttons, but purely for its content. Therefore, it is important that you regularly post informative and current information. It also helps if you post unique material that is not found on other websites of similar topics.

Again if it’s about an extreme sports website, create a review about the newest mountain bike not about a bike released 5 years ago.  Put those creative juices to work and write appealing content.  A good idea is to insert pictures and videos to illustrate your articles.

As soon as your website goes online start telling your friends and acquaintances about it so they can spread the word.  As mentioned previously to keep your website popularity high, post really awesome articles regularly.

Take note that since your website is open to the public you must not disclose personal information about yourself.  Providing an email address is sufficient for effective communication with your website visitors.  In most cases there is no need to provide a phone number (unless you are running a busy commercial website) and there is never any need to provide your home address.

Another point that is often overlooked by beginners is copyright. Make sure you don’t copy something on your website that isn’t yours and claim that it is, as this will be damaging to your reputation.
